The first Borussia Dortmund black jersey
Borussia Dortmund is a club founded in 1909. Although it’s history goes back to more than a century, it’s iconic away jersey didn’t see the day until the 90’s. The first Borussia Dortmund black jersey is the 1995-96 season. During this season, Borussia Dortmund managed to win the Bundesliga title.
This jersey is made by Nike and sponsored by Die Continentale. It is black overall with yellowish hues around the upper chest and under the arms.
1996-1997 Black jersey
The black jersey once introduced was seen as a lucky charm. So Borussia Dortmund decided to continue with the tradition to the next season. This jersey charms seemed to be working as during the 1996-97 season, Borussia Dortmund managed to win their first UEFA Champions league title.
This jersey is quite similar to the previous one. It’s made by the same manufacturer and features the same sponsor. The difference is Die Continentale logo is now in yellow instead of white. The yellow lines cover the sleeves and the sides of the jersey. You can also see subtle BVB logo watermarks all over the shirt.
1997-1999 Borussia Dortmund away jersey
By 1998, the German club Borussia Dortmund have already made a name for themselves in Europe. As they gathered more fan in Germany and abroad, Borussia Dortmund knew that they had to show an attractive image to their fans.
With Nike still the manufacturer, Borussia Dortmund changed sponsors during this season to the German fashion company S. Oliver. The logo is a negative of the iconic BVB branding. This jersey is overly black with a yellow line that cover the entire sides and under the arms.
2003-04 Borussia Dortmund black jersey
After some of the best years for Borussia Dortmund, the German club faced some financial problems starting 2002. As the first publicly traded club in Germany, Borussia Dortmund saw it’s shares plummet.
Loosing Nike as a manufacturer, Borussia Dortmund founded it’s own sports manufacturing company and named it Goool.de. The 2004 jersey is a very simplistic one with black all over and stripes of yellow at the tips of sleeves and around the neck. The sponsorship goes to Electric services giant e.on.
2004-05 Borussia Dortmund away jersey
This season was one of the worst in Borussia Dortmund history. The club suffered from a financial crisis and had to cut 20% from the players payroll.
This jersey is the comeback to Nike as a manufacturer. Again Borussia Dortmund decided to go with an all black style with very thin stripes defining the main part of the shirt.
2005-06 Borussia Dortmund black jersey
During this season, Borussia Dortmund suffered from a very slow start in the Bundesliga Table. However, they managed to finish 7th by the end of the season. They also showed profit for the first time in years after the sale of David Odonkor to Real Betis and Tomáš Rosický to Arsenal.
This version of the iconic shirt features a race car-like style. With a black design and a middle yellow line, the BVB logo is put in the center. We also see that Nike and e.on still sponsor the shirt.
2007-08 Borussia Dortmund away jersey
The struggle continued during this season, as Borussia Dortmund lost to many smaller teams. Although they finished 13th of the table, they managed to reach the DFB Cup final.
A diagonal yellow stripe cuts the all black style of this jersey. The new sponsor Evonik logo is lined perfectly while Nike is still manufacturer.
2009-10 Borussia Dortmund away jersey
Jurgen Klopp was assigned as Borussia Dortmund coach for this season. He managed to bring young players up from youth ranks. He also bought some young prospects from other teams. His efforts led to the team finishing 5th that season.
This shirt was unintentionally made to hurt opponents eyes. Kappa, the new manufacturer, designed the t-shirt to look like sun beams. And thankfully it looks like it did it’s job as Borussia Dortmund won most of their away games that season.
2010-11 Borussia Dortmund away jersey
The season Borussia Dortmund were crowned Bundesliga champions in nine seasons. Thanks to Jurgen Klopp’s management, Borussia Dortmund featured the youngest rooster with the likes of Mats Hummels, Shinji Kagawa and Nuri Sahin.
Back to simple, we can see that the Evonik and Kappa still sponsor the jersey. In this #23 Kagawa jersey, the design is very simplistic and reflects Borussia Dortmund iconic black jersey.
2011-12 Borussia Dortmund black jersey
One of the best season’s of all times. Borussia Dortmund finished top of the table with 81 points in addition to winning that season’s DFB Cup against Bayern Munich. They also qualified for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
This jersey is similar to the previous one with one difference. The overall color distribution is characterized by a gradient. A big Kappa logo is situated on the shoulders.
2012-13 Borussia Dortmund black jersey
Now a German title holder, Borussia Dortmund played an impressive season. However, they didn’t succeed in defending their Bundesliga title losing to Bayern Munich. But their biggest effort was reaching the UEFA Champions League final against their Arch-rivals Bayern even though they lost 2-1.
A partnership with Puma is made at the beginning of this season didn’t interrupt the Borussia Dortmund black jersey tradition. This shirt is similar to it’s predecessors. The only difference is the yellow surrounding of the Borussia Dortmund iconic logo.
